I thought I could get an essentially permanent Night shift by using the "schedule" option (with Manual checked off, which I'm reasonably assuming) to set a range beginning 5 min from now, ending 4 min from now, and then waiting 5 minutes. It works with older Macs, and even Macs running older operating systems, like El Capitan and Yosemite. It's been a great tool for years on the Mac and might just have been the inspiration for Night Shift. However, I have to do this every morning. f.lux is an app that offers Night Shift-style brightness and hue adjustments depending on the time of day. It is kind of frustrating when Apple uses the ‘planned obsolescence’ in its products by selectively preventing some features from functioning in older Mac despite the latest version of macOS installed. The closest way to getting what I want is to check "Turn on until tomorrow", which works as expected. My iMac (iMac11.3 Mid-2010, running macOS 10.12.4) does not have that tab for Night Shift so I will stick with Flux for now. It’s right under the Schedule pop-up menu.I'm using Mac OS Sierra on an 11 inch Macbook Air, using an external Acer 24 inch monitor. It can basically turn on Night Shift without you. Nocturnal is a free, open-source app that allows you to control Night Shift from the menu bar. Once Night Shift starts working with the external monitor, you can run your MacBook with the lid open if you want.
Just use the Color Temperature slider in the Displays settings. This often leads to Night Shift being triggered on the external monitor.
You can also set how much your display colors shift towards red when Night Shift is active. When the storage is being calculated, you can simply tap on Manage option. Schedule Night Shift and control its intensity in the Display System Preferences Schedule: You can choose among Off if you don’t require any scheduling, custom to set your specific timings, and Sunset to sunrise according. Click on the Night Shift tab, customize the different options as per your requirement.
